Hi Dave!  What's up?

Friday, January 04, 2008

Two more days.

Three and a half weeks behind us, and only two days ahead of us before Dave's break is over.

And I'm on page two of the CHARGE blog ring.  That's simply unacceptable.

We have had a very nice Christmas break with Dave here.  (He did listen to Johnny Cash really loud until someone got him some headphones, but that is now in the past and we can't hold it against him.)  My little brothers were very admiring of his idea to make a movie out of PlayMobil pieces and a monster truck, and as far as I know it was accomplished without anyone ending up in the hospital, so it can truly be counted a success.  And he moved a computer upstairs for me, told me how to make a backup CD of all my files, and told me how to make the sound work on my computer, so I should be better prepared next semester for him to be gone.  Still, I'm sure it will be trying.  Grief and emptiness will once again reign in this home.

But in an effort to find and look at the bright side, at least we won't have to squeeze three people on one side of the table anymore.

For Dave

I am officially dedicating this xanga site as a tribute to Dave.  He has long been my favorite big brother and it is only fitting to honor his memory in this way.  Though he is no longer with us, and we will see him no more until the dawning of that future Christmas break, let us remember him as the helpful, train-loving person he was!  And may he continue to help and inspire me, from that better place where he now is, to see clearly how to make my computer do what it's supposed to.  Though it has been over a month since we said goodbye, I believe that he is still guiding me from wherever he is to help me upload pictures to the proper folder.

We will never forget you, Dave!

(Dave, do I get extra happy bonus points for updating twice in one week?)

My father decided we should show our goats at the fair this year.  For people like us, this is done purely for the enjoyment derived from walking a goat around in circles, since the breeder who brings a hundred goats every year wins all the prizes.  I did get  a third place in one category though!  It was actually pretty fun.

Now, with tomorrow being the last day of the fair, comes the sad part.  We have three kids that we don't want, so we have to sell them. (If any of you want a registered, show quality oberhasli doe, let me know.) My father, Rachel and I were sitting on the rail of the pen talking about the best way to sell them when a tall, nervous looking young man approached us.  Taking a deep breath he asked, "Are you Mark?"  My father replied in the affirmative.  "Do you have a white minivan?" the young man continued.  Again, my father replied in the affirmative.  "Did your white van have a rather large, round dent in the back of it when you came here?"  No.  It most definitely did not.  "Because, my steer got loose, and I think he ran into your van."

At this point Rachel burst out laughing. My father was a bit too shocked to laugh.  We followed the guy out to our van, where he pointed out some 12-foot skid marks the out-of-control steer had left.  "He was on the grooming stand and he got loose.  He just lost his footing and ran into your van."  He gave us his name and number, but considering the fact that our van could have had 12 steers run into it by the looks of it, it's unlikely that my dad will bother about the dent.  Instead, Rachel has suggested we put a bumper sticker beside the dent reading: "This dent was left by a prize-winning steer at DuPage County Fair!"

My options were clear: "Update your blog, or don't use my computer."

Since Dave's is the only computer we have on this trip, I was left with little choice.

But as long as I'm updating, I may as well tell you some things about Dave that he hasn't had time to update about since entering in the predestination discussion (which I am finding very interesting, by the way, but Dave already knows my views, so I can dedicate my blog to other things for now. )

Dave has been doing a lot of haying.  He also goes swimming with my cousin and her teenage friends (including girls) every evening once haying is done.  He seems to enjoy this.  The teenaged girls seem to enjoy it too.  I think it's funny.  I have never met anyone who enjoys recreational arguing more than my cousin's friends do with Dave.  Not even the debaters.

This evening we went out for pizza with my uncle's family.  Dave sat with the girl cousins and spent the whole time trying to impress them with how much pizza he could eat.  And they were impressed, too.  He also told them about how manly he was for not having a girl friend.  I don't think they were convinced.

Dave is one among many people who I will never understand.  Why anyone would be so insistent that their little sister update her blog is beyond me, for one thing.  Nevertheless, he certainly does make life interesting.  It's true that once he leaves for college, I'll have far less things to be amused by.  That may be good though, because I won't have time to be amused while figuring out how to use the computer without his help.

There Dave, is that a good enough update?
